The PIG00-14582 is an entry level fence that bears a close resemblance to the 13661 model.

In fact they’re identical except for a couple of things:

  • The 13661 gives you double the coverage area
  • The 13661 has a visual and audible wire break alarm; the 14582 only has a visual alarm to alert you to a break in your boundary wire

Here’s a table to give you a side-by-side comparison so you can see which of these underground dog fences is better suited to your situation:

MODELMaximum Coverage AreaAudible Wire Break Alarm
PIG00-14582 Basic In-Ground Pet Fence5 AcresNo
PIG00-13661 In-Ground Fence10 AcresYes

The 13661 costs a bit more but the extra money gets you a couple of extra features.

So if you need a budget friendly fence that covers more than 5 acres, or if the idea of an audible wire break alarm appeals to you, check out my review of the 13661 here.

But if you don’t need either of those things, you can save yourself a bit of money by going with the 14582.

Here’s what this PetSafe basic in-ground fence has to offer:

  • 4 adjustable levels of static correction plus a beep only mode
  • Run Through Prevention ramps up the intensity of the electric stimulation as your dog gets closer to the boundary wire
  • Over Stimulation Protection automatically stops the static correction after a maximum of 30 seconds
  • Anti Linger Prevention automatically gives your four legged friend a static correction any time they linger in the Warning Zone for longer than 2 seconds
  • Low Battery Warning
  • Good for dogs in the 8lb-125lb range
  • Visual wire break alarm
  • Can handle an unlimited number of dogs
  • Multiple compatible collars so you can mix and match if you have multiple dogs that are different sizes or temperaments
  • Can cover up to 5 acres with additional dog fence wire
  • Surge protector is included in the fence kit
  • Excellent customer service

Along with that you get PetSafe’s limited lifetime warranty which means that for the first year, any replacement parts will be free.

After that you’ll pay a small service charge which translates into a deep discount on any parts you need replaced for the lifetime of your fence.

Everything you need to get the 14582 up and running is included in your fence kit; here’s what you get:

  • Transmitter with power adapter
  • PUL-275 receiver collar
  • One PetSafe RFA-67 battery
  • 500 feet of 20-gauge boundary wire – enough to cover about 1/3 of an acre. To reduce the chance of wire breaks, a lot of people upgrade to a heavier 14g or 16g wire at the time of purchase. If that interests you, check out the details for a dog fence wire upgrade on Amazon.com here.
  • Surge protector
  • 50 boundary training flags
  • 2 Wire nuts
  • 2 Gel-filled capsules
  • Test light tool
  • Operating and training guide

First Impressions Of This PetSafe Underground Fence

The 14582 is a reliable pet containment solution that comes at an affordable price.

From what people who wrote a review on this fence said, the collar isn’t strong enough for really willful dogs such as Boxers and German Shepherds nor is it small enough for dogs under 8 lbs.

However if yours is a multiple dog household and you have dogs that are outside the 8-125 lb range, PetSafe has you covered.

In the accessory section below, you’ll find a number of receiver collars that are compatible with the 14582.

You’ll have no trouble finding one that’s appropriate for all your dogs, no matter what size they and temperament they are.

But overall, the PIG00-14582 has all the necessary features that you’d want in any underground fence for dogs and offers them at a bargain price.

What Dog Lovers Have To Say

The vast majority of reviews across the internet are favorable for the 14582.

There’s a lot to like about this fence so the complaints are few and far between.

What Dog Lovers Especially Liked:

  • Completely customizable to any shape and size so will fit your yard perfectly
  • Clear, well defined boundary
  • Run Through Prevention
  • Over Protection Correction
  • Anti linger feature
  • Low battery warning light
  • Can be used with unlimited number of dogs
  • Compatible with other PetSafe collars
  • Surge protector comes with the kit
  • Excellent customer service

What Some Dog Lovers Didn’t Like:

  • Not strong enough static corrections for a stubborn dog. Fortunately there’s a compatible PetSafe Stubborn Dog Collar that works very well when it comes to effectively containing all those lovable hardheaded canine buddies.
  • There were a few random complaints about how difficult the 14582 was to install but that’s part and parcel for underground pet containment systems.

But all in all, the vast majority of dog lovers who installed this fence say it’s a dependable system. And at a budget price point, they feel the 14582 gives you great value for your money.

Installation Details For The PIG00-14582

There’s just no getting around it: Installing this fence is going to take some time and effort so you have to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and break a sweat.

But that’s the case with any in-ground dog fence, and compared to similar models the 14582 is no more or less difficult.

While details of the installation process are beyond the scope of this review, in this section we want to touch on one of the main components: the transmitter.

Transmitter RFA-523The RFA-523 PetSafe transmitter is the heart of this in-ground fence. It’s compact, basic and easy to set up.

Once you plug it in there are 2 indicator lights that will come on to let you know:

  • Your system has power
  • There’s no break in your boundary wire loop

Indicator lights are a great feature to have on an electric dog fence because they allow you to know, just by peeking at your transmitter, whether or not it’s OK to let your dog out.

From there you only have 1 setting to adjust and that’s the Boundary Width Control.
This dial is used to set how close your dog can get to the boundary wire before their receiver collar activates.

With the 14582 that distance can be adjusted from about a foot to over 12 feet.

What You Need To know About The PUL-275 Receiver Collar

Click Image To Check Price On Amazon.com

The PUL-275 receiver collar comes standard with the 14582 underground fence kit.

Weighing in at about 2.8 oz, the receiver unit on the collar measures 2.5″ long X 1.3″ high X 1.3″ wide and the strap fits neck sizes of 6″- 28″.

Although the manufacturer says the PUL-275 is good for any dog over 8lbs, most people who wrote a review on the 14582 in-ground fence say the receiver unit is too large for dogs under about 12lbs and the static corrections aren’t strong enough for dogs over about 125lbs.

The main downside to this collar is that it’s not rechargeable. So you’re going to have to consider the ongoing cost of replacing the battery.

The RFA-67 battery lasts anywhere between 3-4 months, depending on how often your pooch challenges the boundary.

The nice thing is that you don’t have to worry about remembering to change the battery because there’s a low battery indicator light on the collar that flashes to let you know when it’s time for a new battery.

PetSafe says this collar is waterproof but we’d say it’s only water resistant because you can get the collar wet but submerging it for any length of time may damage it.

petsafe 14582 fence pinterest imageA nice feature of this collar is that the receiver unit is the ‘pass through’ type.

That means that when your nylon strap wears out you won’t need to replace the entire collar; you can simply transfer the receiver unit onto any non metallic collar as long as it’s at least 3/4″ wide.

Out of the box the collar is fitted with 1/2″ stainless steel prongs but your fence kit also includes a set of 3/4″ prongs along with a little tool you can use to change the prongs.

In addition to the beep only training mode this receiver collar also has 4 adjustable levels of static correction.

There’s a plastic cover that has to be removed to access the correction level button and this is a nice little added safety feature.

The cover acts as an extra layer of protection and makes it more difficult to inadvertently change the level of static correction your dog is receiving.
